Frequently Asked Questions

What is CMA?

CMA is a brain development program that teaches mental arithmetic based on the principles of the tool, abacus. The program improves a child’s logical reasoning, enhances his or her learning capability, promotes longer concentration span and builds a strong photographic memory.

How is the CMA Program taught?

Two words to describe the design of CMA’s program: fun and engaging. We have some of the most effective strategies for learning abacus mental arithmetic incorporated into every session. Our approach is multimedia. We use memory-enhancing games; a lot of hands-on activities, songs, individual and group challenges, and supplementary on-line practices.

Through these strategies, young children and even adults will gradually be able to perform mental calculations quickly.

CMA believes in an ability-based learning. This means that teaching will be be designed accordingly. We believe that each child has a unique way and pace for learning new things.

How involved are the parents in the learning process?

Our team makes a conscious effort to keep communication lines with parents and guardians open. We constantly check in with them to report the student’s progress and at the same time, gain feedback on how the child is doing and whether there are other things we need to know about his or her abilities.

What are the advantages of learning CMA abacus mental arithmetic?

Learning CMA abacus mental arithmetic can:

  • Improve the accuracy and speed of computing skill or logical reasoning
  • Build stronger memory power
  • Promote longer concentration span and focus
  • Enhance imaging skills or photographic memory
  • Create higher learning capability and self-esteem
  • Increase the level and speed of understanding (comprehension)
  • Have better sense of observation and visualisation power
  • Sharpen sound judgement and keener listening skill
  • Reduce stress and enjoy fun learning
  • Enables development and utilization of the whole brain
  • Promotes creativity
What does the Kindy Program include?

The Kindy Program is the fundamental phase in the Abacus and Mental Arithmetic learning.

The teaching contents include:

  1. Writing numbers in the right sequence.
  2. Learning the abacus images.
  3. Learning and singing the Abacus Formula Songs and Multiplication songs.
  4. Learning to manipulate the abacus beads from 0~9 by right finger sequence.

The Kindy Program establishes a happy and relaxing learning environment that involves a lot of games, singing and dancing. The program helps cultivate the ability of the students to concentrate, which is CMA’s primary goal.

What is the difference between the twice-a-week program and once-a-week program?

The content between the two programs is the same. The difference will be seen in the progress of the students who attend the twice-a-week program. Their progress is generally faster because they get more guidance and are more frequently exposed to exercises.

Why is mental arithmetic important?

Learning how to compute numbers mentally is important because it effectively taps the unexploited parts of the brain. This promotes the strengthening of the child’s overall intelligence.

Mental arithmetic utilizes the full capacity of our brain - It uses the left brain (logic) in manipulating the beads on the abacus and the right brain (creativity) in visualizing the position of the beads.

What is the difference between abacus math and regular math that is usually taught in school?

Most young children learn counting numbers by counting their fingers. It is difficult for them to comprehend numeric relationships beyond the number 10 for lack of countable objects. Regular math relies on limited memory and brainpower to solve arithmetic problems.

On the other hand, the abacus represents multi-digit numeric relationships in a concrete bead-based system. Using an abacus, young children can relate number values and comprehend the concepts of mathematics easily – it is readily visible and tangible. This makes abacus math far more superior to regular math. Abacus math establishes numeric relationships in a clear and logical way for small children.

How does learning mental arithmetic through abacus math help a child perform better in school mathematics and other activities?
  1. The mental picture training that abacus math uses elevates memory power and improves the concentration of a child.
  2. The speed training enables the child to respond to questions promptly and think faster.
  3. The speed hearing training encourages the child to dedicate full attention to studying by listening more attentively and effectively.
  4. In general, the child’s creativity and ability to analyze problems will show considerable improvement.
  5. Abacus training makes the child more confident in dealing with schoolwork and deepens the interest in learning new things.
Will my child be confused about the mathematics taught in school because of CMA?

No, CMA does not teach the academic mathematics taught in school. Our programs focus on total brain development through two-hand abacus arithmetic. Children are still required to familiarize with the methodology taught in school. Our method compliments and does not substitute the concepts taught in school. We encourage students to use CMA methods to double check their calculation in school.

Why is there a need to learn Abacus Mental Arithmetic when calculators and computers can be used at school?

Learning the abacus is instrumental in total brain development. It is not just a tool to help you solve mathematical problems, but helps a child’s brain development and makes him or her able to calculate without any tools. It’s like choosing to climb the stairs to the third floor of a building even though it has elevators because it improves your overall health and gives you the necessary exercise. Similarly, learning the abacus mental arithmetic system works as a mental exercise for the brain.

What’s the difference between CMA and other enrichment programs available in the market such as KUMON, Galileo, Enopi?

Kumon uses the traditional methods of calculation based on school curriculum, whereas the other two (Galileo and Enopi) teaches “Singapore Math“. Singapore Math makes arithmetic problems visual – it makes children visualize numbers. On the other hand, CMA teaches the kids to master the four basic mathematical operations using two-hand abacus arithmetic. The students’ minds are trained to not just visualize the numbers but the whole abacus itself which results to faster calculation. In the process, CMA develops the logical left brain and the creative right brain. This gives your child an edge - not just in mathematics but other subjects as well.

What is the difference in abacus teaching between then and now?

Conventional abacus lessons used only single-hand teaching. Most conventional abacus lessons used 2/5 abacus (i.e. 2 beads on top and 5 beads at the bottom) while CMA uses 1/4 abacus (1 bead on top and 4 beads at the bottom) in the training process and we use two hand four finger methods in manipulating the beads.

How much is the course fee?

There’s an option of once-a-week program or twice-a-week program. The course fee is Php 6,500.00 per module (once-a-week) or Php 4,500.00 per module (twice-a-week). Each module consists of 10 lessons.

As parents, we are not trained or have any knowledge of the abacus. How do we teach or guide our child at home?

Parents can assist their children by joining regular seminars organized by the CMA centers. You will learn techniques of bead stirring and calculating. You can also help your children through on line tutorial. CMA students are given a password to access on line tutorial. Parents can go through this with their child. CMA teachers are also available to guide you on how to best assist your children at home.

What is the duration of one lesson?

1 hour for Kindy Program. 1½ hours for Kinder Program and Primary Program.

How much is the trial lesson?

The trial lesson is at Php 450.00. However, we give out FREE TRIAL LESSONS during promotional campaigns. Please subscribe to our social media account to be updated with these offers.

How do I sign up for the trial lesson?

Please contact your preferred CMA center and make an appointment. Trial lesson is subject to availability of time slots in that center.

I find that the fees charged at CMA too expensive. Can the fees be reduced?

You will definitely get your money’s worth with our world-class curriculum that produces excellent results via the variety of multimedia teaching resources, unique workbooks and dedicated teachers.

Do you offer trial lesson for your programs?

Yes, we offer one trial lesson per child who can write and understand the concept of 0 to 9 for our Kinder and Primary Programs. For children who are 5 years old and below, they need to go through a free initial assessment to determine their capability to start the Kinder Program.

Are all the teachers trained to teach?

All our teachers at CMA are certified by CMA Taiwan. Before going onboard to teach, they go through a period of training where they familiarize themselves with our program, and learn the abacus method. In these trainings, they are also taught how to best teach children and engage them during their classes. All throughout the year, we also hold seminars that help teachers enhance their skills in the abacus method and in teaching.

What will my child learn from the program?

During the program, students will:

  • Learn the proper technique of clearing and stirring beads on the abacus using two hands simultaneously.
  • Learn effective and fast calculation techniques, which involve the four operations of numerals (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  • Learn to memorize words using our power memory program.
What is the best time for a child to start learning?

As soon as your child starts to write numbers from 0-9, this is the best time for him/her to grasp mathematical concepts. This is the best time to build a strong foundation for your child’s educational endeavors.

Is it too late for a ten-year-old child to pick up abacus mental arithmetic?

No, it is never too late.

How can CMA help to increase a child's intelligence?

CMA is designed to improve not only a child’s calculating ability and his/her understanding of arithmetic, but also to increase the memory power and creativity, the concentration level and the listening skill, as well as the ability to analyse problems. On top of loving math for lifelong success, our ultimate goal is to build the child’s confidence level in their schoolwork and life.

By stimulating both the left and the right sides of the brain during the training process, experts believe that abacus and image abacus training is the key to optimal learning capability.

Will it pose as a challenge to learn abacus if my child is left-handed?

The uniqueness of this two-hand four-finger abacus system will train the student to be able to stir the abacus beads using fingers with dexterity. Being left-handed means the child will need a little practice to be able to stir the beads on the abacus using the right hand skillfully. After perfecting the technique of using the right hand to stir the beads, he or she will then combine both the left and right hands to stir the beads when calculating questions involving formula.

can-my-child-enroll-and-join-an-existing-class-in-the-middle-of-a-term-will
